WE NEED YOU

This plan is not intended to sit on a shelf, but to be brought to life.

We want to encourage our Maketu whānau, residents and manuhiri to have a climate kōrero and reflect on what you want the future to look like for you and the generations to come.

The more we talk about climate change, the more we think and care about it, the more likely we are to act on it!

How to have a #ClimateKorero

It can be a bit tricky to have a kōrero about a heavily charged topic like climate change.

Not everyone will have the same opinion, so it’s important to find some common ground. This may feel daunting, so here are some things related to climate change that might be easier to agree on:

We want to keep our way of life here in Maketu.
We want a promising future for our tamariki and mokopuna
We want to be prepared for and protected from the impacts of extreme weather events
We want to be healthy, have clean air to breathe and clean water to drink
We want good, stable jobs and security in a changing world
We care about the taiao and the health of local and global ecosystems

It’s really important to listen more than you speak. Really try to mindfully listen to what others have to say rather than only preparing what you will say next.

Respect the diverse ways, including different types of emotional responses, through which people may engage with the topic climate change.

You do not have to change someone’s mind – simply having an open dialogue and giving space for individuals to engage with climate change who otherwise might not is a significant achievement (but if someone happens to take greater action on climate as a result of a conversation, that’s of course a great thing too!).

So, take a good look at the plan, talk about it with your whānau, friends and neighbours, and think about what you can do to make this happen.

Specifically, we’re looking for people who:

Are interested in participating in our working group.
Are experienced in project management and want to be involved in shaping the next steps.
Can help us with funding to take action.
Are excellent communicators so that our community knows what’s happening and how they can be involved.
Are key connectors so that we are linked to all relevant stakeholders and can influence change and progress.
Can bring relevant expertise to the table.

Let’s move away from climate anxiety and distress, towards climate action. Together we must protect our whenua and our people!
