Three Maketū entities have come together to provide a focal point for our community to begin the process of planning for the impact of climate change. These three entities are:
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whakaue ki Maketū
Roana Bennett (Kaiwhakahaere)
Moerangi Potiki (Chair)
Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whakaue ki Maketū exists to protect and enhance the interests and rights of Ngāti Whakaue in and around Maketū, and to sustain these interests and rights for future generations. The Rūnanga is the mandated iwi authority for Ngāti Whakaue ki Maketū, providing services and advocacy for the people and the environment.
Ngāti Pikiao Environmental Society
Raewyn Bennett (Chair)
Ngāti Pikiao Environmental Society is an Iwi entity that provides a pathway that give effect to the kaitaikitanga and rangatiratanga obligations of iwi. In Maketu the society supports a group of Kaitiaki in their Mahi Taiao, monitors water quality and engages in advocacy and submission processes.
Whakaue Marae Trustees
Petera Tapsell (Chair)
Whakaue Marae Trustees provide the tikanga and governance for Whakaue Marae. The marae sits on the edge of the Maketū estuary and is the source of manaakitanga and māramatanga for all who live in and around Maketū.
